The GCC rezoning saga has finally crossed the finish line, and Rapid City is walking away with 20 fewer acres dedicated to heavy mining and extraction.
If you watched the latest planning meeting, you might have caught the bureaucratic irony of the morning: agenda items got reshuffled right up until the vote. You really can’t script local government. But amidst the shuffling of agendas and schedules, the core takeaway is a massive sigh of relief.
Those 20-odd acres are now listed under the SDCL umbrella once again. For those of us who spend our days tracking the underlying currents of municipal zoning, this distinction is huge.
It means that land is legally insulated from becoming a mining pit in the near future. The boundary line held firm. We didn’t just kick the can down the road; we actually bolted the lid shut on extraction for that specific parcel.
