Rapid City SD – South Street between 12th Street and West Boulevard has been torn up since late September, and it will still be torn up when voters head to the polls Tuesday. Meanwhile, drivers on Jackson Boulevard lose a lane starting Monday. Here’s what to know before the week starts.
Jackson Boulevard: one westbound lane closed starting Monday
SDN Communications begins directional boring Monday on a multi-block stretch of Jackson Boulevard. The westbound outside lane will be closed from West Main Street to Mountain View Road.
Only that one lane is affected. The rest of Jackson Boulevard stays open, though traffic will be slower through the work zone. The city advises drivers to use extra caution there.
The work is expected to wrap up by Nov. 13.
Questions about the project go to Ryan Smith with SDN Communications at 605-978-1059.
Voting at West Park Apartments Tuesday
The Eleventh Street polling location at West Park Apartments sits right next to the South Street construction zone, where crews with Halme, Inc. are installing a new water main and storm sewer and rebuilding the road. The closure raised concerns about whether voters could reach the site on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
City Engineer Roger Hall and Public Works staff have worked out a plan with the contractor:
- Parking: available along Eleventh Street beside the building and along Fulton Street on both sides of Eleventh.
- South Street: stays closed. Plan to come in from Eleventh or Fulton.
- Lighting: temporary lights will brighten the entrance in the early morning and evening.
- Help on site: city construction inspectors will be there to assist anyone having trouble reaching the entrance.
Hall said the polling place supervisor has seen the plan, considers it adequate, and will direct where the “Vote Here” signs go. The city said it may adjust the plan before Tuesday if needed.
The South Street project is scheduled to be finished Nov. 20.
