RAPID CITY, S.D. — Mayor Jason Salamun has appointed Carla Cushman as Rapid City’s next city attorney, the city announced Wednesday via social media. The Rapid City Common Council will take up the appointment at its June 1 meeting.
Cushman has served as interim city attorney since April 1, when Mayor Salamun confirmed he had removed longtime city attorney Joel Landeen from the position. “It was my decision,” Salamun said at the time. The city did not publicly disclose the reasons for Landeen’s termination. Landeen had served in the city attorney’s office since 2004 and as city attorney since 2012.
At the time of Landeen’s removal, the city announced it would conduct a search for a permanent replacement. The two-month search concluded with the appointment of the interim attorney.
Cushman, who served as deputy city attorney prior to her interim role, is a graduate of Augustana College and the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law. She has been with the city attorney’s office since 2012.
“Carla Cushman has earned the opportunity to serve as the next City Attorney for Rapid City,” Mayor Salamun said in Wednesday’s announcement.
The confirmation vote is scheduled for Monday, June 1 — one day before Rapid City’s municipal primary election.
