Rapid City Council Elects Tamang as President, Meyer as Vice President

Rapid City’s vow to the community


RAPID CITY SD — The Rapid City Council entered a new leadership era Monday evening, electing Ward 1 Council Member Stephen Tamang as Council President and Ward 5 Council Member Callie Meyer as Council Vice President.

Tamang was nominated by Bill Evans and Callie Meyer. Kevin Maher was also nominated, by Lindsey Seachris and John Roberts. The council voted 6–4 in favor of Tamang.

For vice president, Evans and Maher nominated Meyer. Meyer in turn nominated newly-seated Ward 5 member Laura Armstrong, who respectfully declined the nomination. Meyer was elected vice president.

Tamang steps into the presidency after serving as Council Vice President under Pettigrew since January, when he was elevated to that role following Bill Evans’s departure from the position.

A practicing physician with Monument Health who holds an MBA in Healthcare Management, Tamang’s legislative priorities have centered on community well-being, public health initiatives, and expanding support systems for vulnerable local populations.

Meyer secures the vice presidency at the start of her second year on the council.

Recognized as the youngest woman ever elected to the Rapid City Council, Meyer’s professional background is rooted in local tourism and community development. She currently serves as Director of Community Engagement for Visit Rapid City and previously managed operations as Executive Director of Main Street Square.

Moving Forward

The newly elected leadership team takes the reins at a critical juncture for the municipality.

The council faces an immediate slate of heavy industrial zoning decisions, multi-million dollar infrastructure projects, and ongoing coordination with Pennington County.

The leadership roles are effective immediately, guiding the council through the remainder of the 2026 – 2027 legislative term.
