The Heart of the Rush: Celebrating Nuggets Birthday and Nearly Two Decades on the Ice

Nugget the Rapid City Rush Mascot

RAPID CITY, SD — In a town where local sports franchises come and go, one towering, 6-foot-5 presence on the ice has remained a constant beacon of pure, unfiltered community spirit.

August 22, marks the official birthday of Nugget, the amiable donkey mascot of the Rapid City Rush.

While his major on-ice promotional birthday bash won’t take over Slumberland Furniture Ice at The Monument until January 9, 2027, the milestone offers a rare moment to look back at how a humble burro became the enduring heartbeat of Black Hills hockey.

An Origin Rooted in the Black Hills

When the Rapid City Rush franchise was preparing for its inaugural season back in 2008, the team sought a symbol that truly represented Western South Dakota. They found their inspiration in the famously friendly, roaming “begging burros” of Custer State Park.

The task of naming him went straight to the community. Through a district-wide contest, then-third-grader Dylan Dettman of Corral Drive Elementary School coined the moniker “Nugget,” beating out entries from all 1,016 third-graders in the Rapid City School District—a nod to the Black Hills gold rush heritage that birthed the team’s identity.

Bringing that character to life required something special. Behind the ears was a local graphic artist and Native man whose friends pushed him to audition after seeing a small newspaper ad.

Originally planning to merely buy season tickets, he auditioned, landed the role on the spot, and quietly made history by breaking ground for Native representation as a professional sports mascot.

Nearly two decades later, that same dedication continues to power every flag wave, dance, and high-five.

From Double-Overtime Glory to Community Fixture

Nugget’s tenure spans the highest highs in franchise history. He was right there on the ice when the Rush captured the historic 2010 Ray Miron President’s Cup in double-overtime, rallying the arena through every tense minute of championship hockey.

Yet his true legacy has always been built away from the spotlight of game nights:

  • Everyday Community: Leading parades through downtown, lighting up classrooms during school reading visits, and high-fiving toddler racers at the Strider Cup Indoor Championships.
  • The Locker Room Bond: Suiting up alongside the team and earning a reputation for drawing lines of photo-seeking fans that occasionally make the players playfully jealous.
  • The Unofficial Vitals: Towering at 6-foot-5 and a lean 195 pounds, his official dossier lists a diet consisting almost exclusively of hay, paired with an abiding love for movies like Shrek and Winnie the Pooh.

Save the Date: The 19th Birthday Bash

While August 22nd marks the calendar milestone, the full-blown celebration is set for mid-season when the Rush take on the New Mexico Goatheads:

  • When: Saturday, January 9, 2027
  • Pre-Game Party: Nugget’s Birthday Bash in the Aspen Room from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM — free and open to the public, featuring guest appearances from mascot friends across the region.
  • Puck Drop: 7:05 PM MT at The Monument Ice Arena.

To pack the stands and help sell out the arena for his 19th birthday, fans can secure tickets by visiting www.rapidcityrush.com or calling the front office at (605) 716-7825.

Additionally, for local organizations looking to bring a piece of Rush history to their own gatherings, Nugget remains one of the most accessible figures in Black Hills sports. He is available for community appearances ($50 flat rate for nonprofits, $75 for corporate events), which can be requested through the website or by calling the number above.

In a sports landscape that often moves at breakneck speed, Nugget remains a steady, joyful reminder of why local hockey matters.

🎈HAPPY BIRTHDAY NUGGET🎈
